While it is not yet a household name, after seeing Dear Evan Hansen for myself last night I can see just why this small production is making big noise! Adapting from the book by Steven Levenson the play tells a raw, moving and inspiring story of a socially anxious high-schooler who is suddenly thrust into the spotlight when he inadvertently invents an important role for himself at the centre of a local tragedy and that’s just to start with. This brand-new production helmed by one of Australia’s great interpreters of musical theatre, Dean Bryant, is an empowering and uplifting experience for anyone who’s ever considered themselves on the “outside, always looking in” and I can tell you first hand it is a play you won’t want to have missed.
